A successful business continuity planning (BCP) initiative should prepare the organization to effectively respond to disruptions that may render normal resources or operational capabilities unavailable or inoperable for an extended period. Effective recovery planning efforts also need to minimize the potential for disruptions that can cause irreparable damage to the organization and jeopardize its survival.

Assembling and maintaining an effective BCP requires a comprehensive process to methodically identify and address your organization’s unique risks and objectives. The BCP process should include specialized activities that accomplish key objectives, including:

  • Establishing the initiative as an enterprisewide program
  • Evaluating and identifying the organization’s disaster risks and recovery requirements
  • Selecting and implementing viable contingency strategies
  • Preparing document recovery plans
  • Training appropriate individuals on the BCP
  • Validating the organization’s recovery capabilities
